Time has come when we need to ask whether the development we talk about is the development of the people, for the people and by the people OR the organization/donors planned the development, as per their own understanding. Empowering Animation talks about people led development. Years after years farmers, in Jharkhand, used to go for rain fed paddy cultivation. Jharkhand has faced erratic rain (some time no rain, little rain and some time excess rain), which caused famine.
The Tribal economy used to be termed as need based or community centric, with hardly any consideration shown in profit making endeavours. The rural market was a place more of social gathering to meet one another and share commodities than doing any business to gain profit. The community themselves produced most of the goods like oil from seeds, broom, mat, edibles, agricultural equipment, etc. Modernisation with all its positive impacts, on one side, has become detrimental to tribal community by imposing on it the profit based economic system and thus it has adopted all the ills of market dominant economy. Outsiders have taken over the market system in tribal villages.
Tribal communities used to have their own seeds, use their own organic manure, but things have changed. Now, seeds, fertilizer, pesticide come from outside. Now marginalized farmers individually do not produce as much as to manage marketing system all by themselves.
SIGN determined to build the capacity of tribal promoting the ‘capacity’ of tribal communities to develop, implement and sustain their own solutions to problems in a way that helps them shape and exercise control over their physical, social, economic and cultural environments. It is a continuous process required to foster the pride and appropriate local leadership that allows communities, through their members, to take responsibility for their own development. SIGN conducts various training at regional and community level to build the capacity of its partner.
